Centers: Small groups of students rotate through three or four learning centers. Some examples of learning centers are guided reading, journal writing, math games, computers, and art projects. Some centers are supervised, and others are independent. We often use parent volunteers during center time.
Calendar: We meet each day on the carpet for math and literacy activities relating to the calendar. Some examples are days of the week, months of the year, patterning, money, counting, letters, shapes and weather.
Reading: Reading is part of our instruction throughout the day. Read-to, Guided Reading Groups, Choral Reading, Morning Message, Partner Reading and Shared Reading are a few examples of our daily activities.
Phonics: Our goal is to help students have an understanding of letter/sound relationships and how they are used in reading and writing.
Writing: In kindergarten we encourage developmental spelling which allows students to write the sounds they hear. This gives students the opportunity to become independent in their writing. It also gives them the ability to read their own writing.
Math: Our math activities are based on the Everyday Math Program. Students engage in hands on learning experiences that help them develop a true understanding of numbers and early math concepts.
Science and Social Studies: These subjects are based on Pattonville’s curriculum which supports the Missouri standards.
